Communications Nowhere are the advances in telecommunications and wireless technology more visible than in San Diego. There are more than 184,000 miles of fiber optic cable laid in the region -- more than in any other city in the United States -- and "Telecom Valley" has seen a 100 percent increase in employment in the last three years. Code Division Multiple Access (IS-95 CDMA), created by a company in San Diego, is now considered the digital wireless communications standard worldwide. In addition, the world's only system supplier of encoders, set-tops and transcoders is also located in San Diego.

   Telecommunications  and  technology  have replaced weapon systems and aircraft as San Diego's growth industries, and their continued success will affirm San Diego's designation as "The First Great City of the 21st Century."
